Thumbs up Sterling Dietz - Rising Star

A couple of years ago I was working in Las Vegas for a client at a Trade Show. Leaving the convention center, I hopped a bus to head over to the strip. I was sharing some magic with the people on the bus and this young kid was quite interested in what I was doing. He told me that he was a magician too (how many time have you heard that before?), so I asked him to show me some of his magic (expecting a rendition of a card trick). Well this kid blew me away. He was really good. This was my first "chance" encounter with Sterling Dietz. He had a star quality about his looks and personality. He was someone I would not easily forget.

Later that year I met Sterling again at Stan Kramien's Magic Jamboree in Newberg, Oregon. We both remembered each other (apparently I had made an impression on him as well). We started catching up on what had been going on since our last meeting in Las Vegas. He informed me that he had come to compete this year. Long story short, he took first place!

I was standing next to Stan Kramien when Sterlings act finished. Stan turned to one of the men who helped him with the affairs of the Jamboree and he said "I want that kid to be my opening act next year". Stan could have said that about me and I wouldn't have felt any more joy than I did for Sterling at that moment.

Sterling Dietz is only 16 and has only been into magic for 3 years, but I am convinced that he is someone you will all be hearing a lot more about in the future. In my opinion he is a rising star. Apparently, Jep Hostetler -- executive director of Magi-Fest, the long-running Columbus magic convention, feels the same way.

Sterling Dietz will be the headliner at Magi-Fest this year. Read all about it by clicking here.

Here's another update on my friend, Sterling Dietz.

At the 2007 I.B.M. Convention in Reno, Nevada, Sterling tool first place in the Junior Stage category. He also competed for the Gold Medal, received the "People's Choice Award," and received the Fantasma Prize Package for up-and-coming young magician. The Fantasma award came with with an all-expense-paid trip to New York for Sterling and his parents.

Sterling writes all about his trip and all the great people he met in The Linking Ring, Volume 88 Number 2 February 2008 edition. If you're an I.B.M Member then you should read what he has to say.

Until we appear again,
