why are you?
I do double lifts during the ads on TV or when I'm at the Movies. I will usually run through the deck half a dozen times, in a mindless way. Yes, I do have half a dozen decks scattered around the House.
Practice is persistence, you just have to keep at it.
It might help if you have some goals in mind, to help KEEP you motivated to learn, polish and "perfect" the move. As an example, if you like Marlow's "Twisting the Aces" and you have found a showing of it on Youtube, every once in a while go back to that vision and think how good it will be to do that trick.
After all, all you need to do is master the Elmsley Count.
Do you think much about the people you are likely to be 'performing for'? What they may like or dislike? What is your personality and how can you bring that to your performances?
One of the best questions to have a real and meaningful answer to is: "Why do I want to do magic?"
Do you have your answer to this question?

New (starting up again)
Hi, My name is Dennis and I start in magic back in Denver Co. in 1977. Then I moved back to New York State only doing magic for friends and family when one day at a llocal super market I made a napkin disappear. There was professional magician there that asked me to joion the New York state Magiciain gild. So I am back at performing magic and doing kids birthday parties as well as adults. My stage name is Sirstylishned.

We were all there once
Kevin,
Welcome to the art of Magic.
I think we were all at one time where you are now. You are Eager to lean but dont know where to start.
For a beginner, I also recommend you Oz Pearlman's Born to Perform DVD.
But If you are really serious, here is a book That i recommend,
Tarbells Course in Magic. There are 8 Volumes, it has every-kind of magic in it, Starting from cards, ending with billiard balls and thimbles.
So Go and order, as a matter of fact, to start off, try one of the effects right here on Blacks Magic, I guarantee that a purchase from here will get you started off and satisfied.
Let us know what happens.
Peace
~HD

The way I started learning card illusions was rather, unorthodox. I guess it's kind of like learning a language by immersing yourself in that culture and trying to learn it by listening and replicating. Basically, I went onto youtube and watched videos of card illusions. I'd watch them over and over. Of course, all of the good videos are flawless. The simple illusions, with a little common sense and experimentation, can be figured out. You can also ask other magicians for simple base techniques. As you figure out illusions, you'll learn more techniques and gradually be able to figure out more complex illusions. As I said, you can also consult other magicians who you can work with to improve techniques, and they can also recommend DVDs and books and such. All in the name of improvement.
