Default Don't rush your magic.

Greetings All,

Firstly let me explain my lack of posting the past week. I was in Vegas catching up on some magic shows and gossip and had limited web access so I didn't post at all.

Several acts in Vegas were talking about this act on AGT and how this is what happens to you when you rush a prop and don't rehearse properly. Remember... its not the prop that creates the magic but rather the magician. This performer would have served himself better as well as the rest of us if he had rehearsed more.

Best,

Tim

Hello Greg,

Although the producers promised that no exposures would be left in the show you can see that is clearly not the case here. Bad, unrehearsed magic has no place on national television.

Best,

Tim

Tim,

That is highly unfortunate for a magician who claims to have been doing magic for 25 years, especially at that level of competition. I agree that he did not rehearse the routine enough.

One of the things I always stress is rehearsal, and then take it beyond that. Once you have an effect sufficiently rehearsed, then you should stop and take a look at each and every area where something could go wrong. If you have 15 identified possible failures, then you should create 15 recoveries that make it appear as if it was part of the intended routine. Now you should rehearse each one of the recoveries as much as you rehearsed the original routine.

The recovery used in that video was lame, and the audience didn't buy it. I think he would have been better off to admit to a malfunction when he was called on it. Maybe the judges would have had pitty on him a third time. But they didn't buy into his BS explanation and therefore booted him out of the competition.

Until we appear again,
Kipp Sherry

Hi Kipp,

The prop was rented and rehearsed a very short time. We've all fallen into that " I want to do this right away" trap and hopefully learned from it. Lets hope this guy does as well.

Best,

Tim

Yes, it is too bad. I was watching that with my Mom and even she said there were clear mistakes, and she is the kind who is EASILY fooled. I too assumed it was rented or perhaps he re-mortgaged the house to buy it and try to squeeze it into the show. Its really too bad, I kind of like the illusion, when performed right of coarse. We all make mistakes, but if you are going to go on national TV, I would hope to be a little more polished.

Just my 2c.

He should have said : "Dang, my friend Valentino said this thing was guaranteed to work ! That's the last time I borrow a trick from him ."

I can't find the video online now but I had seen one where he performed a chair suspension and exposed it as well. He might just put Val out of a job. LOL

Best,

Tim

Ok.. so I found the other video where the Chair Suspension is exposed. The exposure is not quite his fault but since he posted the video that shows it then he has to share in the blame for it.

Best,

Tim

Now other media is getting in on the exposure. Just goes to show you that when you make a mistake on television it won't go away for a while. BTW... there is talk that this " mess up" happened during rehearsals and not during the show in front of an audience. David claims that AGT showed the mistake in rehearsal rather than the real performance. This does sound plausible as AGT has done this before. They care nothing about the performers but instead focus on ratings. They really should not have aired it regardless if it was rehearsal or the real performance.
