Dos and Don'ts -- Rules Part I
It’s simple: follow the rules and nobody gets hurt.
PROFANITY
---------------
Street Magic.tv caters to magicians of all ages, creeds, religions, et cetra. Posts which use profanity will be deleted. No exceptions. If you for some reason cannot express your thoughts without some type of swear word, then mask it (i.e., F&%$ing A$$hole $&it licking c#%* sucker.) You get the idea. The system is set up to auto-mask most swear words anyway… but try to pay attention to it. At the end of the day, if you do it, we may ban you. So try to play nice. It wouldn’t hurt you to expand your vocabulary anyway.
RELEVANCE
---------------
Keep the discussion relevant to the subject matter. If the thread is about thumb tips, don’t wander off onto cruise ships, politics, and how your dog got killed because you tried to put it in a dove pan.
Threads that are off topic may be deleted or moved.
PERSONAL ATTACKS
---------------------------
Look, either be a cool cat or F$^# off. Period.
Don’t get on here and start lambasting people. If you’re not sure what lambasting is, look it up.
If you are here to stir up trouble, we’ll be watching and we’ll come after you.
THE BIG OFF-TOPICS
---------------------------
Generally speaking this is a forum and community for magicians of all levels, so try to keep the forum related to that. We strongly suggest avoiding the big taboo topics like religion and politics except in forums specific to off-topic discussions or that are side-lined for “anything goes”.
Now, a word of warning… if you happen to go into a thread designated for off-topic discussions, then don’t come crying to us if you get your feelings hurt. Remember, we allow membership to anyone who likes magic and has an Internet connection. You never know who you are talking to… remember that.
USER NAMES
-------------------
We STRONGLY encourage our members to use their REAL (FIRST & LAST) names such as "James Clark" rather than made up ones like studmagic, top magician, magi123456, et cetra.
Accountability is important and too many jerks go to forums to hide behind their user name. So pony up and be a real man/woman and stand behind the things you post. Otherwise, you need to go somewhere else where you can get away with being a dumb a$$.
Also, we’d prefer you don’t use someone else’s name. Seriously… if your real name is Bob Smith don’t use David Blaine’s name as your user name. Know what we mean? That reeks of having your head up someone’s butt. You won’t be allowed to use the name of a product or a URL—so just don’t do it. Once you chose one you are stuck with it… only an administrator can change it, which we will do if for any reason whatsoever without warning if we think we need to.
Finally, registering under multiple usernames is totally prohibited. Do it and we catch you and you’ll not only get banned we’ll ban your IP address and hire someone to flog you in public.
SIGNATURES
-------------------
Put whatever you like, for the most part, in your signatures. Use your brain here and don’t write a paragraph about your latest product or offering. Put your URL, email, or other contact details there. DO NOT post them under your name directly in a post. We will delete them to avoid dead links in the future.
DUPLICATIONS
---------------------
Don’t make multiple threads on the same dang topic. Lean to use the search tools offered here.
URL POSTING
-----------------
Don’t post ANYTHING that links to illegal activity, pornography, hate, or the like. Seriously. You won’t get a warning, you’ll be banned. That’s not up for discussion.
INSTRUCTIONAL POSTING
----------------------------------
Don’t post “how toos” about anything illegal or dangerous.
You can share things of your own creation, but not someone else’s. That would fall into…
EXPOSURE
-------------
Anyone who blatantly exposes any commercial effect not of their own creation to the public in the forums will find themselves under serious attack by staff and members. Just don’t do it. If we find a thread or post that exposes commercial effects it will be deleted and the member warned at a minimum. If it is serious, they’ll be banned.
We have a section dedicated to sharing techniques, methods, and the like for SERIOUS magicians who understand how delicate this topic is and know better than to hurt their brothers by exposing their work online. That section is password protected and you only get in by invitation.
ASKING FOR SECRETS OR HELP
-----------------------------------------
Don’t ask anyone here “how to” do any commercial effect. If you need help with one you’ve purchased, you can post it in our help section and members may PM you to help out if you can justify your need for assistance (i.e. you can tell someone else who owns it what the directions say, etc).
POSTING LANGUAGE
-----------------------------
All posts in the English section should be in English. In the French section, French. Get it?
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
------------------------------------
Don’t post other people’s stuff. Any posts that do that or advertise trading DVDs and the like will be deleted and the member banned or slapped in public with a Dove Pan. Oh yeah, we’ll also side with the company and give them your details. And if the cops get involved, we’ll help them too. We are not a P2P site for goodness sake.
CHARACTER ASSASINATIONS
----------------------------------------
DO NOT gossip about people in a negative way. You are certainly welcome to discuss facts but don’t be stupid. You can really hurt someone’s reputation by posting things that aren’t true about them. And even if they are true, it isn’t always the best thing to do.
Posts like that fall into the lawsuit category and we have no interest in playing that game. Don’t point fingers.
Don’t talk crap. Don’t start fights. Get the idea?
Here’s an example of what might be okay: “I personally disagree with Bob Smith. He and I generally do not get along. We simply have personality differences that are likely irreconcilable.”
Here’s an example of what isn’t okay: “I hate Bob Smith’s beard. He is a worthless human being. He drinks the bong water, talks slow, and couldn’t perform to save his life!”
The first is vague and simply states your position without addressing specifics. Though, sometimes it is just best not to say anything about anyone else anyway! The latter is just a flame and will be deleted.
Finally, if you have a problem with someone, take it to them by PM… do NOT post it in the public forums. If you can’t get anywhere that way, report it to a moderator—it’s their job to look into it. And finally, don’t post PMs in a public forum unless you have that person’s direct permission to do so.
